The Nigerian Police Service Commission has announced the suspension of Abba Kyari, who is a Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head, Intelligence Response Team (IRT) with Nigeria Police Force.

The commission in a statement Said Kyari’s suspension will take effect from Saturday, July 31 and will remain until they conclude investigation on the accusations against him.

His suspension is coming after Nigeria Inspector General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba recommended the suspension of Kyari, who allegedly took bribes from international fraudster Hushpuppi aka Ramon Abbas.

Trouble started following the internal review of the allegations made by the United States’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) against one of the staff of the police, DCP Abba Kyari.

Earlier in July, the Nigeria police said it had opened an investigation after allegation and indictment from the FBI against DCP Abba Kyari.

According to a statement from the police spokesperson Frank Mba, the Inspector General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba ordered the internal review of the allegations as says the police is committed to the pursuit of justice.

The Director of Media Relations with the US Department Of Justice, Thom Mrozek who confirmed the order of arrest to newsmen also said, an order for the arrest of two other defendants who are associated with Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas in his wire fraud operation have been issued.

According to US court documents, Hushpuppi alleged that bribed Kyari to arrest one Vincent Chibuzo.

The DoJ document revealed that this was after Vincent tried to expose the operation and inform the alleged victim of their scam.

The allegations against Abba Kyari is based on facts that Hushpuppi presented to court as part of his Affidavit for his wire fraud case.

Abba Kyari has denied collecting money from Hushpuppie. In a bizarre Facebook post, the police officer said he never met hushpuppie in person. He said the only money he collected from the fraudster was so he could buy and deliver 5 pieces of native attires, that he claimed hushpuppie saw on his social media page and liked. Kyari further admitted to arresting Vincent, but said he was released after they found that he and hushpuppie only had dispute over money.

How Abba Kyari got entangled with Hushpuppi

Trouble started for Abba Kyari after Nigerian Instagram celebrity Ramon Abass aka ‘Hushpuppi’ pleaded guilty to Count Two of the charges against him in a US court, which were Conspiracy to Engage in Money Laundering.

The case which is United States v. Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, Case No. 2:20-CR-00322-ODW, charged Abbas with Conspiracy to Engage in Money Laundering, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1956(h). Part of what is before the court is also an allegation saying Abbas bribed a top Nigerian police officer with proceeds from his crimes.

The officer alleged in this charge is Abba Kyari.

As it is, Hushpuppi faces up to 20 years in prison during sentencing according to information contained in the court document.

Abba Kyari biography/profile

46-year-old DCP Abba Kyari hail from Borno state in northeast Nigeria.

He is a graduate of Geography when he joined the Nigeria Police Force as a cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in 2000 after he completed his training at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano state.

One of the operations that brought Kyari to the limelight, was when he led a team of officers to arrest the notorious armed robber popularly called ‘Ndagi’ a.k.a Spirit.

Spirit had been terrorizing Numan, the third biggest town in Adamawa state northeast Nigeria.

In 2005, he joined the Mobile Police Force and in 2010 he was posted to the Lagos Command.

Kyari became the second highest ranking officer and officer-in-charge the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) – the squad charged with fighting violent crimes from armed robbery, car theft, kidnapping, gang clashes, sea piracy and terrorism but which later became notorious for its brutality which led to the October 2020 ENDSARS protest.

He served with SARS for five years.

In a video which has since gone viral, the young men can be seen returning bags of rice which was sent to the community as ‘gifts’.

They can be seen throwing the rice bags back into the white Hilux van which came to deliver the items on Sunday.

“We need jobs, we need jobs” are some of the chants they made as they packed the rice back into the truck.

Local media, Zaaradio reports that the youths were protesting against Member of Parliament, Samuel Abu Jinapor who promised them jobs during his electioneering campaign.

However, seven months after the elections, the politician has failed to deliver the jobs he promised instead he tried to persuade them with ‘gifts’.

Local reports say, the angry youths destroyed most of the rice and returned the rest to the representatives of the lawmaker who came to deliver the items.

Who is Samuel Abu Jinapor?

Samuel Abu Jinapor is a lawyer by profession.

He entered Parliament for the first time after the 2020 elections when he defeated the NDC candidate, Adam Mutawakilu.

Prior to becoming Member of Parliament, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff to President Akufo-Addo during his first term from 2017 to 2020.

He currently serves as Minister for Lands and Natural Resources in the second term of President Akufo-Addo’s government.

One of his main responsibilities as minister is to lead the fight against illegal mining which is a major issue the current Government wants to resolve due to the pollution to land and water bodies.

The Nigerian government has expressed disappointment in the Bishop of Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Rev. Matthew Kukah over his statements before the United States Congress where he criticised President Muhammadu Buhari over the security challenges plaguing the nation.

In a statement signed by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari, the presidency described as unfortunate that a church leader is criticizing their own country before a foreign parliament.

During a virtual presentation before the US Congress in Washington on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria by armed extremist groups in Northern Nigeria, Bishop Kukah expressed fears that the Nigerian government under President Muhammadu Buhari has failed to handle issues concerning religious violence correctly.

The Bishop also claimed that the extremists are targeting schools in Northern Nigeria especially Christian schools and they do “indoctrinate the children. They end up converting the children to wives, cooks, spies, sexual slaves and so on.”

However, the presidency has said the Bishop’s claims that only Christian schools were targeted by bandits or terrorists is not supported by facts on ground.

“It is sad to say but also true that victims of crime, kidnapping, banditry and terrorism cut across all levels of the society. Sad but true that the bandits, who kidnapped Kankara students in Katsina State are of the same Islamic faith as those they took away. The same might still be true of those still holding 134 students of the Islamic School Tangina in Niger State. The nation witnessed the sad incident of the female students abducted by bandits in Jangebe in Zamfara State and the over 100 mainly Muslim students of the Federal Government Girls College Birnin Yauri in Kebbi State, who are currently still in captivity.”

“The attacks on Christian students are sad and unacceptable; so also be is the case of the abduction of students of other faiths. The claim that it’s only only Christian schools that are targeted is totally untrue.” The statement said.

Another point the Bishop also complained to the US Congress is that President Buhari is deliberately appointing people of his ethnic group and “faith” into political offices.

He said, “for the first time, the top three officials; the President, Senate President and Speaker are all Muslims. This has never happened before. So, we require practical and measuring assistance that can help us and out children.”

But the presidency also rebuffed this allegations of bias within the government.

“There is no bias in this government when the president is from the north and a Muslim, the vice president from the southern and a Christian, and the cabinet is equally balanced between the two religions. But nothing is in our Constitution that states that political posts must be shared according to ethnicity or faith. It takes a twisted frame of mind for someone to believe that ethnicity is of primary importance in public appointments. It is yet more troubling to hear a cleric separating one group for criticism purely on ethnic lines.” The statement added.

Bishop Kukah is a well recognised Catholic cleric in Nigeria.

He shot into national limelight when he served as secretary to Nigeria Commission on Human Rights violation, which many remembered as the Justice Oputa panel in 2001.

The Archbishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah has expressed fears that the Nigerian government under President Muhammadu Buhari is handling issues which concerns religious violence poorly.

Bishop Kukah said this during a virtual presentation to the US Congress in Washington on the prosecution of Christians in Nigeria by armed extremist group in the Northern parts of the country.

The clergy in his testimony before the Congress claim that attacks on Christians in Nigeria has been happening for many years but has seen a sharp rise in the last 10 years.

Bishop Kukah also claim that the extremists also target schools in Northern Nigeria especially Christian schools and they do “indoctrinate the children, they end up converting the children to wives, cooks, spies, sexual slaves and so on.”

According to Bishop Kukah, “Last year 2020 scores of our Priests in the North were killed, they kidnapped our children and forcefully converted them to Islam. We have issued several statements and called the attention of government to our plight but you see, we have weak institutions.”

Di Bishop of Sokoto Diocese also complained about Nigeria’s leadership structure saying, “for the first time in Nigeria (since the return to democracy in 1999) the top three officials; the President, Senate President and Speaker are all Muslims. This has never happened before.”

Bishop Kukah was born in Zangon Kataf local government of Kaduna state, in northern Nigeria on August 31st of 1952, according to his profile on the catholic diocese website.

He attended St Fidelis primary school, Zagom, before he moved to St Joseph minor seminary in Zaria and St Augustine major seminary in Jos, Plateau state (north-central Nigeria) where he studied philosophy and theology.

Kukah become catholic priest in 1976 and immediately after, he obtained a diploma from University of Ibadan in religious studies and that same year he also got a degree from pontifical urban university in Rome, Italy.

The bishop also received a Masters Degree in peace studies from Bradford University in the United Kingdom in 1980 and in 1990 he completed his PhD from university of London school of Oriental and African studies.

Bishop Kukah shoot into national limelight when he served as secretary to Nigeria Commission on Human Rights violation, popularly known as Justice Oputa panel in 2001.

In 2005 he also served as secretary during the National Political Reform conference and also led the reconciliatory talks between Shell and the Ogoni people in the oil producing South South Nigeria.

Between 2007 and 2009, he was also part of the committee on electoral reform setup by then president Umaru Musa Yar’adua

Reports had it that 50-year-old Ataga was found dead, murdered in an Airbnb apartment in the highbrow Lekki estate in Lagos. His murder was pinned on Chidimma, who confessed to the killing after she was arrested in her parents home in the same Lagos. She claimed she stabbed Ataga after he had raped her and became violent with her.

However, in a fresh twist to the Ataga murder saga, Chidinma said in an interview with CrimeReporters that she did not kill the deceased and that she only walked into his murdered body after returning from where she had gone to purchase the hard drugs they were to take.

She claims to be overwhelmed after being arrested, and sensing that nobody would believe her story, she confessed to the murder to journalists who had interviewed her after her arrest.

She however maintained that she did took the deceased ATM card and withdrew money from his account.

Meanwhile, in a separate interview with CrimerFighters NG, Barrister Franklin Ufu who is a cousin to Usifo Ataga disbelieved Chidinma’s earlier confession that she acted alone in killing the deceased.

”I have had the very regretable priviledge of seeing that dead body five time. My cousin’s hands were tied so badly that the rope entered his skin. The rope is right there as an exhibit with the police,” Ufo said in the interview.

“That binding could not have been done by that lady alone, not possible, even if he was drugged. It is not possible because I saw the lady and I saw my cousin and I said this is not possible.

Apart form the fact that he was tied, there were multiple stabs on his body. So that story of two stabs and neck is not true. He was stabbed in other places, his leg. Infact in Yaba mortuary, the attendants were so dramatic that they told us clearly. The stabbing here (touching his stomach) was so bad it is a hole. The guy stuck his two fingers into my cousin’s body in my presence. He was stabbed here(touching the right side of his neck) deliberately twice and on his body multiply.”

In the meantime, Chidimma is still in the custody of the Lagos police, where she is waiting to be charged to court.

The death has been announced of veterans Nigerian musician Ganiu Fasasi, popularly known as Sound Sultan.

A statement from one Dr. Kayode Fasasi, believed to be his brother, announced the death on the morning of 11 July, 2021.

Sound Sultan whose real name is Olanrewaju Ganiu Fasasi died on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at the age of 44, his brother said in the family statement.

Several celebraties have been paying tribute to the late musician with this obituary poster on social media.

Sound sultan’s cause of death is believed to be Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.

Recently in May 2021, the singer announced he was sick on social media drawing messages of sympathy from many of his fans.

“Sound Sultan is by his wife, three children and his siblings.

“We, his family will appreciate the utmost privacy as we come to grips with this tragic loss.” The family’s statement concluded.

The Paramount ruler of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has kicked against the decision of the Edo state government to take custody of the 1,130 stolen Benin artefacts that are in the process of being repatriated from Germany.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki and the other top government officials are currently in Germany to facilitate the return of the stolen artefacts that were allegedly looted during the invasion of the Benin Kingdom in 1897 by the British.

While the palace wants the artefacts kept in the Benin Royal Museum which will be built within the palace, the state government wants the items preserved in the proposed Edo Museum of West African Arts which would be funded and executed by a private company named Legacy Restoration Trust Ltd.

At a press conference held on Friday at the palace, the Benin monarch said that there was no controversy over the issue as an agreement had been reached that the artefacts would be housed in the royal museum. He opined that since the artefacts were stolen from the Benin palace, it is expected that they be returned to the Monarch’s palace when they are repatriated.

“I have called this meeting today (Friday) to intimate you of the matter of the Benin artefacts in Europe on the verge of being repatriated, which I am sure you have heard and read about in recent weeks. You may also have heard about the recent activities of a group of individuals who incorporated a company since January 2020 called Legacy Restoration Trust Limited.

It has become germane to note that the advocacy and demands for the return of the artefacts looted from the Benin Kingdom in 1897 have been going on for decades before the emergence of the incumbent Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki. I must sincerely thank the governor for joining the struggle and showing commitment to retrieve our stolen cultural heritage from Europe.

While anticipating the return of the looted artefacts from Europe, I want to note that attempts to divert the destination or the right of custody of the artefacts is not in the interest of the people of Benin Kingdom, to whom the Palace of the Oba of Benin provides leadership. The looted artefacts awaiting repatriation from Europe are the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom created by our ancestors and forefathers within the traditional norms and rites of the kingdom.

They are not property of the state government or any private corporate entity that is not a creation of the Benin Kingdom. The right and only legitimate destination for the artefacts to be repatriated as already pronounced by my father is under the aegis of the Benin Royal Museum that will be sited within the precincts of the Palace of the Oba of Benin, from where they were looted, and also, the proper traditional institution that is also the custodian of all the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom.

The palace, therefore, strongly advises that anyone, group, organisation, or government – national and international – that is dealing with any organisation or artificial group in the process of returning the looted artefacts from the Benin Kingdom would be doing so at their own risk and against the will of the people of the Benin Kingdom.”

“I informed him (Obaseki) that Oba Ewuare II Foundation had been registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and had worked out a framework for not only receiving the artefacts but also building a modern structure, the Benin Royal Museum, within the precincts of the palace and that land has been secured for the building of the Benin Royal Museum under the supervision of the traditional institution.

But for reasons best known to him, the governor has gone against the understanding, given recent events. As a matter of fact, the people of Benin Kingdom and other stakeholders, especially the Benin Dialogue Group, had at different meetings endorsed the Benin Royal Museum to be built within the palace, as well as endorsing the Oba Ewuare II Foundation for fundraising and other requisite administration processes.

We wish to use this medium to call on the Federal Government to take custody of these artefacts on behalf of the palace until the Benin Royal Museum is ready for their collection.

Under no circumstances should the custody of our age-old artefacts be handed to any privately contrived entity like Legacy Restoration Trust.”

Corporal Carolyne Kangogo, 34, is on the run after allegedly killing Constable John Ogweno, whom she was in a relationship with.

Mr Ogweno, who was attached to the Nakuru Central Police Station, was found dead on Monday morning, inside a car at Kasarani police line in Nakuru where the two lived.

But as detectives are still searching for her, police in Kiambu reported that she had spent the night with one Peter Ndwiga, a security consultant, whose body was found at a hotel room in Ruiru on Tuesday, July 6, local outlet The Star reports.

Police officers rushed to the scene where it was established that a man and a lady booked a room on July, 5, 2021 at 4:22pm.

The body of the second victim was found with a bullet wound to the head, and one empty spent cartridge of 9mm was found in the room. One wallet containing an ID card with the names Peter Ndwiga, 32, and car keys with a holder written Toyota Probox KDB 506U were found in the pockets of the deceased.

The hotel’s CCTV footage shows a woman in a yellow hoodie leaving the hotel. Another screen grab of the footage obtained from cameras at the VIP lounge show Ms Kangogo walking into the hotel with a man who was wearing a burgundy pair of trousers and a grey coat

Confirming the latest development, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said Ms Kagongo lured the man to the room after paying for it, before savagely shooting him in the head at point-blank range.

“Detectives are looking for a female Police Officer who has gone berserk and is on a killing spree,” DCI said in a statement.

“Corporal Caroline Kangogo, the suspect behind the killing of Police Constable John Ogweno, in Nakuru, has shot dead yet another man in cold blood. At around 1pm Tuesday, the owner of the hotel, Mr Peter Mugeshi, made a distress call to Theta Police Station and Murera Police Post under Kiambu Police Station to report that a client was found dead inside his room.”

“The rogue officer who took off with Ogweno’s firearm a loaded ceska pistol, lured a man to Dedamax Hotel in Kimbo, Juja area at around 4pm yesterday. She later emerged from the room at around midnight and fled to an unknown destination, leaving the dead man’s body sprawled on the bed.

“Detectives have established that she lured the man to the room and went ahead to pay for it, before savagely shooting him on the head at point-blank. She later told an attendant working at the guest house that she had gone to buy toothpaste, before making her escape.

“The man’s lifeless body was discovered today morning. The suspect who is armed and dangerous has been on the run since early yesterday morning, after she killed constable John Ogweno, who was based in Nakuru.

“We are cautioning members of the public especially men to be on the lookout for the rogue officer, who is luring men to her trap before killing them. Let nobody trust her or accommodate her since she is armed and dangerous.” the statement concluded.

The body of the man, which was discovered on top of the bed, had one shoe on. He still had his clothes on. The body was moved to General Kago Funeral Home in Thika, awaiting a post-mortem.

Detectives in Nakuru say the female officer was entangled in a web of love affairs. Investigations also indicate that the Ms Kagongo, on several occasions communicated with people who are on police radar for various crimes.

Nakuru County Criminal Investigations Officer Anthony Sunguti said the detectives have reason to believe that Mr Ogweno could have died at the hands of one or several people.

“Some of the people she has been communicating with, according to her phone records, include a number of a dangerous criminal ring, who are being pursued by the police,” said Mr Sunguti.

The officer revealed that Ms Kangogo was married to a senior police officer based in Mombasa County and has two children. It is not clear whether the officer was still married or had divorced.

One of her colleagues said the woman has been involved in several dramas with her lovers, majority of whom are police officers.

“She is feared by many police officers as she is known to cause problems for her lovers. One day after she disagreed with one of her lovers, she raised a false alarm and the man was beaten up by a mob. He was arrested and thrown into police cells before it was discovered that he was also an officer who had been framed,” said the colleague.

In another incident, the colleague said Ms Kangongo had beaten up her husband in public after they differed.

Mr Ogweno was a graduate with bachelor of commerce degree, who was transferred to Nakuru six months ago from Kericho County.

According to Nation Africa, sources indicate that he was also running a web of love affairs despite being married to two wives.

One of his senior colleagues said Mr Ogweno was an honest and disciplined officer who carried out his duties with much diligence.

Police admitted him to Estcourt Correctional Centre in his home town – the province of KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday. Police had earlier warned that they are prepared to arrest him if he refuse to hand himsef to them by midnight.

Court sentenced Zuma, 79, to jail term last week afta he failed to attend a corruption inquiry.

The sentencing sparked a legal drama in the country, with deadline imposed for midnight on Wednesday (22:00 GMT) for the arrest of the former president. The court handed him the deadline after he refused to hand himsef in on Sunday.

In a short statement, the Zuma Foundation said the former president has “decided to comply with the incarceration order” and hand himsef in to prison authorities.

His daughter, Dudu Zuma-Sambudla, later wrote on Twitter saying her father is “on his way [to jail] and he is still in high spirits”.

No former president in South Africa has faced a prison sentence before.

Zuma was sentenced on 29 June after he went against instructions to give evidence in an inquiry about corruption during his nine years in power.

The Guptas, a South African business family were accused of conspiring with politicians to influence the decision-making process when he was in office. But Zuma had repeatedly clamed to be a victim of political conspiracy.

Though his own party forced him out of office in 2018, the African National Congress (ANC), he still retains a body of loyal supporters, especially in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal.

On Sunday, crowds formed what they called a human shield outside Zuma’s palatial home as part of efforts to stop his arrest. Similar crowds gathered before he handed himself in on Wednesday.

Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has criticised the way and manner with which the Nigerian government ‘arrested’ the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Ipob, Nnnamdi Kanu.

On June 30th, Justice Minister Abubakar Malami announced that Kanu has been returned to Nigeria.

“We want to inform Nigerians that government working with security agencies has succeeded in attempt to arrest Nnamdi Kanu and we have brought him back to Nigeria.”

Since then most Nigerians have been wondering if Kanu received the Umaru Dikko treatment.

In 1984, during the military dictatorship of Muhammadu Buhari, mercenaries were hired to grab, drug and crate back to the country Umaru Dikko, a former Transaction minister who was accused of embezzlement.

But in an interview with BBC Pidgin, Prof. Soyinka accuse the Buhari administration of repeating what it did in 1984.

“It’s not for me to tell the government to prepare itsef because when the truth about the way in which they arrested Nnamdi Kanu comes out, it will be surprising. People are trying to justify the arrest, but I believe that Nigeria acted outside international law.”

“The second issue has to do with the way Kanu conducted himself outside the nation. The level of hate speech from Kanu is unfortunate. On the way forward, Prof. Soyinka said government need to reexamine why people don’t trust them at all and stop the approach they are taking on groups calling for separation from the country.
