But reports making the rounds on Friday indicate that the union has suspended their strike action. Dr Chris Piwuna, Vice president of the Academic Staff Union of the University (Asuu) confirmed the suspension to BBC News.

Asuu’s suspension of the strike is coming after the Appeal Court gave them condition to obey the ruling of the Industrial court.

Why the strike was suspended

ASUU president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke in a statement circulated on Friday said the union suspended their strike in compliance with the ruling of the court.

He said they also considered the respect they have for President Muhammadu Buhari and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

“The National Industrial Court in its wisdom gave an order compelling ASUU to resume work pending the determination of the substantive suit before it.

“the Court of Appeal acknowledged the validity of the grounds of the union’s appeal but still upheld the order of the lower court.”

Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke in the statement said they are not satisfied with how the government has addressed their demands.

The Asuu president then directs all their members to resume work immediately.

Why ASUU went on strike

ASUU has been on strike for more than eight months now.

The public universities lecturers’ union is demanding the implementation of an agreement the federal government signed with them in 2009 plus other demands.

One of the major issues blocking negotiations between government delegates and ASUU is the payment platform the union is insisting the government used to pay its members.

The president of ASUU Victor Emmanuel Osodeke said the National Information and Technology Development Agency (NITDA) which is supposed to conduct an integrity test on the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) has abandoned the platform even after upgrading it. But Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige say ASUU is trying to prolong the strike by making negotiation impossible.

He explained that they are insisting on UTAS even when NITDA has confirmed it failed the integrity test and fraud can be committed on the platform that can lead to huge loss of money.

The rest of their demands is inside the 2009 agreement ASUU signed with the federal government but ASUU says the government is still dragging its feet on the matter.

Meaning of UTAS

UTAS means University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) – a payment platform created by lecturers in public universities in Nigeria as an alternative to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) that the federal government has been using.

Currently, the Nigerian government uses IPPIS to pay salaries of about 711 ministries, departments and agencies but ASUU does not want to be a part of it. They claim that the platform is inefficient and gives room for lots of corruption.

Meanwhile, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the government agency that regulates the use of technology in Nigeria has tested the UTAS brought forward by ASUU and approved it.

The majority of party delegates voted for Bola Tinubu, a Muslim former governor of Lagos state. That decision plunged the party into several weeks of debates and controversy on who will be the party’s vice presidential candidate. Many wondered if Tinubu from southern Nigeria, would decide to pick a vice from the plurality Muslim north thereby creating a Muslim Muslim ticket.

Nigeria has an unwritten rule where power alternates between the north and south, and between Muslims and Christians, the two dominant religions in the country. Between 1999 and 2007, Olusegun Obasanjo, a Christian from the south served as president with Atiku Abubakar, a Muslim northerner serving as his vice president. Then Umaru Musa Yar’adua served as president with his Christian vice, Goodluck Jonathan until he died in 2010. Muhammadu Buhari, a Muslim northerner has been serving as president since 2015 with his Christian vice, Yemi Osibanjo. This religious harmony is what Tinubu and his planners might bring to a halt if his Muslim Muslim ticket gets elected to office next year.

The problem with a Muslim Muslim ticket in today’s Nigeria

Tinubu’s calculations are simple, he is very popular in southwest Nigeria because he is from that region, and if he can join forces with the Muslim north, his electoral victory is assured. But this syllogism falls apart for a couple of reasons.

Nigeria is a very diverse country, with over 250 tribes and ethnic groups, most people are most familiar with the oversimplified map that divides the country into the three major ethnic groups of Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. Even in this oversimplified map, the Hausa Muslim north does not have the majority, they have a plurality. This means that the Hausa Muslim north does not outnumber the other regions if they combine their numbers.

This was why Muhammadu Buhari lost in all his three previous attempts to be president. In all those attempts, he did get the votes from the northern Muslims, he only succeeded when he was able to get votes from the southwest and northcentral.

Tinubu’s decision to pick Kashim Shettima to appease the northern Muslims had the unintended but expected consequence of alienating northern Christians and Christians in general who do not want to accept a Muslim Muslim ticket in a country where they make up almost half the population. The Christian population in northern Nigeria is not insignificant.

If you divide Nigeria into northern and southern states, of the 19 northern states, at least 3 states Plateau, Benue and Taraba have an outright Christian majority population. Kwara, Kogi, Nassarawa, and Niger all have a Christian population between 35-45%, and these states are all liberal states unlikely to vote along religious lines. Kaduna, Bauchi and Adamawa each have a Christian population of at least 30% of the residents. The total population of Christians in the 19 states that make up northern Nigeria should be at least 30% and APC stands a real chance of loosing that entire block of votes.

Tinubu has plenty of problems, the least of which is the fact that he is old and sick. Then there is the fact that Muhammadu Buhari has been unable to improve the country’s security, economy, infrastructure or improve the country’s corruption perception and Tinubu is campaigning to continue this legacy. Tinubu is already a hard sell, further alienating half the country will only make his candidacy even harder to sell.

The better alternative

The APC has a better and more marketable candidate in Yemi Osibanjo. The fact that he was a Christian from the south, and would have paired perfectly with any Muslim northerner. He is relatively healthy and more eloquent compared to Tinubu.

Yemi Osinbajo was a missed opportunity for the APC, but still when they decided on Tinubu, a Muslim from the south, his vice presidential pick should have been a Christian from the north. A northern Christian candidate would have secured almost 30% Christian vote for the APC in the north and avoided these Muslim Muslim ticket crises in the country in general. The northern Christians have the numbers, if they decide to combine forces with other regions most especially along religious lines, they can cost the APC this election.

The Commission says its investigations revealed that the listed apps are owned by other popular apps that are under investigation for unethical practices and breach of consumer privacy. Specifically, it mentioned Soko Loan as the company behind several other apps being used to circumvent the efforts of the Commission.

Last year August, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) fined Soko Lending Company Limited (Soko Loans) the sum of N10 million for privacy invasion. Soko loan app was subsequently removed from the app store following the request of the FCCPC.

What the Commission is saying

• Giving an update on the Commission’s enforcement operation carried out on Thursday, August 18, 2022, the Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC, Mr Babatunde Irukera, said: “The information available to the Commission demonstrates that Soko Lending appears to be the most consequential digital money lender with multiple apps and brand names covering a significant share of the digital/online lending market, and one of the most prolific actors in violating consumer privacy, fair lending terms, and ethical loan repayment t/recovery practices.”
• “Before today’s operation, the Commission had previously, on March 11. 2022 carried out a similar enforcement action concerning multiple lenders, which action and continuing investigation have reduced previously high and escalating unethical, obnoxious, and unscrupulously exploitative practices in the industry. However. some of the lenders subject to the investigation have devised methods to leverage technology and other financial services alternatives to circumvent account freezing and app suspension Orders. With the operations today, the Commission expects an appreciable additional reduction in these unacceptable practices,” he added.
• “The Commission has also today entered further orders that will disable or diminish violators’ ability to devise circumvention efforts or alternative mechanisms to circumvent the objective of the investigation and protection of citizens. Particularly, the Commission has entered further Orders to Google Play Store to draw down the following apps which were discovered to be created and operating as a circumvention of existing investigative interventions; Maxi Credit, Here4U, ChaCha, and SoftPay.
• “The commission has ordered all operating payment systems including Fluttewvave, Opay, Paystack and Modify to immediately cease providing payment or transaction services to lenders under investigation or not otherwise operating with applicable regulatory approvals. The Commission has also ordered telecommunication/ technology companies (including Mobile Network Operators (MNOs)) to cease providing server/hosting, or other key services such as connectivity to disclosed or known lenders who are targets/subjects of investigation or otherwise operating without regulatory approval,” he said.

Irukera added that for apps not on the Play Store, the Commission would continue to trace what platforms they are hosted on in order to disable them. He also urged members of the public to provide it with any information they have in that regard.

• The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has barred all financial technology companies (FinTechs) from providing payment or transaction services to online money lenders under its investigation.
• The identified FinTechs such as Flutterwave, Opay, Paystack and Monify were said to be operating payment systems and providing services to such online lenders under its investigation or not operating with applicable regulatory approvals.
• This is coming several months after the commission had ordered Google and Apple to enforce the withdrawal of these money lending applications from their stores where evidence of inappropriate conduct or use of the application in violation of the rights of consumers has been established.

The screening of Lauretta Onochie by the Nigerian senate as INEC Federal Commissioner-nominee has been generating controversy among many concerned Nigerians.

The controversy is mainly because she is the Personal Assistant on Social Media to Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari – meaning she is one of the President’s loyalists and also a card carrying member of the APC, the president’s party.

Onochie was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari for the position of national commissioner of INEC in October 2020.

But on Thursday 8 July, 2021 when Onochie appeared before the Nigerian Senate for screening, she said:

She is no longer a card carrying member of the ruling APC or is partisan.

Last week, Nigeria’s main opposition part, PDP protested Lauretta Onochie’s nomination at the National Assembly.

INEC – Independent National Electoral Commission – is Nigeria’s election office saddled with the responsibility of conducting general elections and announcing results.

If her screening scale through, she will rep south south region as one of the senior election officials in the country.

The last time there was this sort of concern regarding Nigeria’s election body was when the then Buhari, as opposition candidate, contested to be president in 2003.

During his election tribunal, he raised concerns that President Olusegun Obasanjo’s government had appointed card carrying members of PDP into INEC.

The Supreme Court in the ensuing case of Buhari v. Obasanjo in 2005 ruled that time that the Inec commissioners being PDP members is not sufficient to lead to the conclusion that were biased.

The head of state was made the affirmation while delivering his speech during the celebration of this year’s Liberation Day.

The day is celebrated every year on July 4, signaling the day when the then Rwanda Patriotic Army put an end to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and liberated the country.

“In keeping with our goal of self-reliance, we are working to build our capabilities to manufacture vaccines and other medications in Rwanda,” he said.

“This will reduce our dependence on supply sources that are unpredictable or dependent on other interests. But this will take time and we have to be patient,” he added.

Kagame said that fighting COVID-19 was a continuation of Rwanda’s efforts to liberate its citizens even more.

President added that “Some relief is on the way, in terms of vaccines, to raise the level of protection, starting with those most at risk, and eventually reaching as many Rwandans as possible,”

He noted that twenty-seven years ago, Rwandans joined hands to liberate our country and hailed Rwandans for having worked together to build the country as they sustain all gains together.

“Ever since we have worked together every day to renew our society and make Rwanda the best it can be for each one of us,” he said.

“Today, Rwanda is not just a place on the map,” he said.

“For us, it means something that we can all identify with and be proud of, and in which we feel valued, Rwanda means hope. It means that we care for one another,” President added.

As part of celebrations, the state of the arts Kinigi Model Village, in Musanze district, was launched.

Worth Rwf26.6 billion ($26.6 million), the Kinigi Model Village was officially handed over to 144 families. The village was built by Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) as part of the RDF’s mission of contributing to the development of the country.

Besides homes for the families, the village has different community amenities including an Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD), among other welfare facilities for low-income families.

“The Kinigi model village being launched, and other community projects that our armed forces have delivered, in partnership with other institutions, is a demonstration of our Rwandan solidarity, and we have made it a habit,” the head of state and the army’s commandant in chief said

He urged Rwandans to put in more efforts to fight COVID-19 pandemic whose positive cases and deaths are increasing.

“It is now more important than ever to follow the measures put in place by the Ministry of Health and other institutions to curb the spread of Covid-19 and save lives,” he said.

“We want every Rwandan to be healthy and free to pursue all the opportunities available to them, including in education, employment, and entrepreneurship,” he assured.

He said that the country was committed to working for Rwanda’s economic and social transformation must continue and accelerate.

“Beyond our borders, we want to continue fostering mutually respectful and beneficial cooperation with our neighbours, with the region, and globally,” he noted

In 2019, the governor was celebrated when he announced that he has enrolled his son in a public school in September that year.

El Rufai along side other dignitaries escorted six-year-old Sadiq to school that day and images circulated by the state government on social media was widely celebrated.

Fast forward two years later, the governor has now explained in an interview monitored by BBC Pidgen that he has since withdrawn not only his son but also his daughter enrolled in the same school to protect the lives of the other pupils in the school.

“My son was registered in the school so also was my daughter who clocked six years. But we needed to temporarily withdraw them for the security of the school because we had intercept from at least two groups who planned to attack the school to kidnap my son.”

“I don’t think that they will succeed because enough security will be there to prevent them, but other children will be placed in danger. We have no idea the types of weapons they will come with, I have taken a stand against paying bandits and we had information about at least three groups that planned to go kidnap my son from Capital school to see if I will pay ransom for my child.” El-Rufai explained.

The governor further revealed that his son is still registered with the school but is currently receiving home schooling at home and only goes to school to write exams.

Academic activities in the nation’s universities may again be paralysed as members of the Academic Staff Union Of Nigeria Universities (ASUU) warns of fresh rounds of strike over alleged refusal of the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) to pay salaries and remit check-off dues of about 1000 staff for 13 months.

Chairman, University of Jos branch of ASUU, Dr. Lazarus Maigoro, accused the AGF of allegedly causing friction between the union and Federal Government, which may trigger another round of strike.

ASUU President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, said despite its promise to the union to pay all outstanding salaries before December 31, 2020, government is still owing members in many of the branches between two to 16 months salaries.

Osodeke alleged that government is withholding members’ salaries to force them to enroll for Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

This we believe is also aimed at deliberately frustrating the implementation of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), the payment platform developed by ASUU.

He said the union has got to a stage where it may be forced to take drastic measures to save the lives and families of its members.

“We call on all well- meaning Nigerians to advise those responsible that this path will force us to take very drastic measures. Invariably, it is the children of all Nigerians in these institutions that would suffer and not just ASUU members.

MEANWHILE, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), has advised the Federal Government to withdraw its circular directing that workers of Staff Schools should not be captured in the 2022 budget.

SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, warned that the union would embark on industrial action if government fails to heed the union’s request.

In July 1984, the then military dictatorship of Muhammadu Buhari sent mercenaries to the UK to kidnap and crate back to the country former transportation Minister Umaru Dikko, who was accused of embezzlement.

The Nigerian government on Tuesday took the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra [IPOB], to court to continue his trial on charges of treason.

Nnamdi Kanu appeared before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The judge gave an order to the DSS [Nigeria secret police] to lock him up in their custody pending the start of his speedy trial on 26th of July.

Nnamdi Kanu was arrested on treason charges in 2015 before court granted him bail in April 2017

The separatist’s followers say his arrest is against his fundamental right.

But Associate Professor of Public Law at the Rivers State University, Richard Wokocha says Kanu’s arrest is in line with the Nigerian constitution.

Kanu is facing 11 count charge which borders on treasonable felony and other terrorism charges.

The Ipob leader jumped bail in 2017 and fled to the UK since the September of that year. In March 2019 a court revoked Nnamdi Kanu’s bail and ordered his re-arrest.

Nnamdi Kanu arrest: when and where trial will take place

On the 26th of July full trial will start at the Federal High Court Abuja.It will be an accelerated hearing.

The prosecution counsel which are government lawyers, must arrange all their witnesses plus evidences.

This time around, Kanu’s lawyers will be present in court to represent him.

The case is scheduled to hold in court two floor five at Abuja Federal High Court. Justice Binta Nyako will be presiding over the case.

Government lawyers can apply for witness protection. That will mean the press will be barred from covering the event.

Former Chairman of NBA OCJ Okocha and Marshal Abubakar say this will be an interesting case due to the charges against Nnamdi Kanu.

Both lawyers believe the government is on the right side of this case.

Okocha and Abubakar both SANs gave the following reasons:

At the time of Kanu’s arrest he was a fugitive and so the manner in which he was arrested is okay.
Government had earlier issued a bench warrant for his arrest as he had violated his bail afta he jumped bail.

Nnamdi Kanu trial: What possibly punishment is he facing?

Again the two legal experts say:

If he is found guilty on the charge of treasonable felony, Nnamdi Kanu will likely face capital punishment.
