Season 5 housemates of the popular reality TV show, Big Brother Naija returned back to the house for the reunion show.

First episode of the show aired on Thursday with only 18 housemates out of the 20 on screen for the first day of the reunion.

The Big Brother Naija show is a popular Nigerian reality TV show where organisers keep contestants in a house for 10 weeks with tasks, to battle for millions of Naira price.

Organisers say this reunion is another chance for the housemates to clear the air and express their real feelings towards each other after the drama that happened during the real show.

The housemates came in on a red carpet entrance to the reunion.

Each of them dropped from their chauffeured car and before walking the red carpet.

One of the housemates, Tolanibaj said she came to the reunion to ” speak her truth not to change the narrative, but explain the narrative that some have attached to the Tolanibaj name.”

She also mentioned that she will confront those she needed to confront.

For Kiddwaya, he said he doesn’t really have any issues with any of the housemates.

Nengi said it was nice to see the housemates again “a lot has happened since the show and hopefully everybody can find a common ground”.

Lilo who was one of the first set of contestant to be evicted from the house said she’s excited about the reunion as she doesn’t get to spend enough time with the rest of the housemates.

“I hope we will be able to talk things out and be friends”

Other housemates also shared their expectations from the show with Ebuka.

2006 Big Brother Naija maiden edition alumnus, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, has been the face of the show for the past three years and some fans are beginning to call for a change of host.

One fan wrote: “Ebuka don eat small, make him allow another person chop! Frank Edoho as BBNaija host for this season won’t be a bad choice tho Eviction night go choke gan” an opinion which started the debate on Twitter.

Frank Edoho, who was the host of the popular Nigerian TV show, ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’ was forced to join the debate quoting the viral tweet with the reply: “What did Ebuka do to deserve all this? Why would you want to change someone that has done a show successfully for only 3 years and have him replaced with one who did WWTBAM for 13 years? Leave Ebuka alone! Please.”

To understand what the show is all about, it is important to understand what it isn’t.

It is not a talent show; which means contestants do not engage in singing competitions, tell jokes, dance, and stuffs like that.

It is not a game show; there are no physical or mental contests.

Rather it is marketed as a reality show which follows a group of people as they live in isolation from the world under constant surveillance from Big Brother.

Millions of viewers watch the housemates do everyday activities like cook, clean the house, comment on each other’s behaviors, party, and lots of on-screen sex.

This is why in the middle of the fifth season of the show, Nigeria’s minister of information and culture orders that Big Brother Nigeria be suspended.

Big Brother is a Dutch reality television franchise which was first broadcast in the Netherlands in 1999 since then there have been over 448 seasons of the show in 54 franchise countries and regions.

The Nigerian version, Big Brother Naija is no doubt the most successful version on the African continent and one of the last surviving versions of the show in the world.

The show has a massive following on television, reaching up to 40 million viewers across Africa.

Since the premiere of Big Brother Naija season five on July 19, 2020, data from social media monitoring tools estimate that every day, Big Brother Naija related conversations reach a 370 million audience, and within the first five days, 760,000 people around the world have posted something about the show online.

The show’s popularity is fueled by millions of fans who vote to keep their favorite housemates in the house.

The housemate with the least votes is continually evicted until there is a single winner.

The winner stands to gain a lot, a #30 million cash prize, a top of the range SUV, trips around the world to Dublin and Dubai, and a special trip to watch the UEFA Champions League final among other prizes.

But not everyone is happy with the show’s success, critics often condemn and point out the many erotic scenes on the show which they claim is contributing to moral decadence in the society.

Others, just don’t find the idea of people doing a mundane everyday activity on TV entertaining, they believe shows like these make the youths mentally lazy.
