Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] has announced it will resume continuous voter registration (CVR) across the country. The government’s election office will begin the CVR exercise from Monday 28 June.

The continuous voter registration will last for over a year and the process has been divided in two categories:

Online and in-person at Inec offices in every local govenment area and one rotational area.

The rotational area will be announced when the exercise gets on the way, Inec Resident Electoral Commissioner Rivers State, Obo Effanga told reporters.

“First we will begin with online registration which will last for three weeks.

“That is for people to fill in their data and upload their passport photographs online.

People need to fill this data “on the portal which will be opened from Monday 28 June.

“Then we will give a date online when voters can come for physical data capture.

The capture will take place “at the Inec office in the voter’s local government area.” He added.

The second category is the in-person where there will be biometric data capture at INEC offices.

The purpose is to cross check whether the data provided online are correct.

“We will give temporary voter’s card to registered voters. That will begin from 19 July, 2021.”

In Nigeria, voting age is 18 years and above but to qualify to vote you have to register with Inec.

Inec voters card is the only valid ID card voters can use to vote during elections in the country.

Inec online registration portal: Who is eligible for fresh registration?

INEC say people who have never registered before and have reached 18 years are the ones eligible for fresh registration.

If you just became a Nigerian citizen or newly relocated to Nigeria and don’t have a PVC before, you are also qualified.

Those who registered in 2011 and other times don’t need to do any registration again.

Inec online registration will cover people who want to correct or make changes to their data.

It is also fo those who want to transfer their voting points or replace their lost or damaged voter cards.

How to know your new polling unit?

The Independent Electoral Commission has increased the total number of polling units across Nigeria. From 119,974 for 2019, it was increased to 176,846 polling units

Additional 56,872 new polling units added in the recent polling unit expansion exercise.

Inside this figure, Rivers State now has 6866 polling units from the 4442 which were previously available.

INEC does not have any accredited online registration centres, the election official added. The commission urged voters not to patronise any one making such claims.

“Anyone with access to internet on their smart phone or laptop can do the online registration by themselves.”

Political parties, traditional rulers, religious bodies, NGOs need to encourage people to come out for the continuous voter registration exercise in their local government areas. He concluded.
