At least 58 students of Federal Government College, Yauri Kebbi State are still missing after gunmen kidnapped them on Thursday.

Yauri abduction rescue mission suffered a set back after Nigerian Army soldiers mistakenly shot and killed students during a gun battle with the bandits.

This is coming after the gunmen killed one of the kidnapped students from Federal Government College Yauri in the northwest state of Kebbi.

Now Sani Shuaibu (not real name) who is a father to four of the children in the kidnapper’s hands has revealed a sad secret to the BBC.

The man shared some of the videos and pictures sent to him by the gunmen (some as early as few hours ago) on the situation of his children.

The father who has been in Yauri town since Thursday talked about his heartbreak after they found his daughter’s dead body.

Three students were killed in a crossfire between bandits and soldiers in an attempt to rescue the abducted students.

Parents of the students say more than 60 students and eight teachers of Federal Government College, Yauri Kebbi State are still missing.

Gunmen invaded the unity school in Yauri last Thursday 17 June.

“It is a feeling I don’t pray for any father to experience.

“Anybody that sends their children to school is not expecting to see their dead body.”

“Already she has asthma so she is someone who needs special attention and medication and this people don’t care at all.”

The father said since Thursday no food or sleep for him and the mother and infact the mother collapsed and has been in the hospital for days now.

“The mother is in the hospital as I speak to you because of what has happened.”

“Among my remaining 3 children still with them, another one is sick and in need of medical attention, I pray those ones come out alive.”

The father said the gunmen haven’t asked for ransom but say the condition is for government to release some of their men in detention.

“The painful part of all of these is that the government hasn’t reached out to any of us parents since this thing happened.”

Reports on Friday said the Nigerian Army has rescued some of the FGC Yauri students, about three of them.

This is the seventh high profile school kidnapping in northern Nigeria in six months.

This is after it happened in Kankara, Jangebe, Greenfield, School of foresty, Kagara , Tegina and Nuhu Bamalli poly in Zaria.

Governor Bagudu said he will discuss with his colleagues and security agencies in this direction, so as not to jeopardise the ongoing commendable operations to rescue the abducted students and staff.

According to local authorities, the gunmen stormed Federal Government College, Yauri on Thursday where they carried out the latest mass abduction.

Local reports on Friday say the Nigerian Army was able to rescue some of the FGC Yauri students.

School staff who escaped narrated how gunmen kidnapped students from FGC Yauri

Governor Bagudu said: ”we will go out there and like I promised, the day we move out, I will not be in the office because we will join you in the field. He added that “other Governors will also join us so that we will be in the field .”

The Kebbi State Governor said, they will do this barring all consequences, in the bid to rescue all the abductees.

Governor Bagudu asked the hunters to go back and fully mobilize, pending when he will get the necessary clearance from the security agencies.

Kebbi closed seven schools after Birnin Yauri Kidnap incident

Meanwhile Kebbi has indefinitely shut down seven schools due to the armed attack at Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri, according to reports.

The Nigerian Union of Teachers say the reason for the closure is because the schools are located in areas bandits can easily attack.

Chairman Nigerian Union of teachers Kebbi, Isah Arzika told News Agency of Nigeria that government has directed all school principals to close any school they believe are not safe.

Mr Arzika added that police and vigilantes have also been deployed to the schools for monitoring and protection.

Reports from Kebbi State in northwest Nigeria say another mass kidnapping attack has happened at Federal Government College Yauri.

It is not yet clear how many students were kidnapped but one school staff that managed to escape estimate the number to be about ’30 students’.

Abubakar Suru told the BBC that he together with some students layed low inside a classroom.”the gunshot we heard, I’ve never heard anything like it before. They entered the school at around 12:30pm and began shooting.”
“They kidnapped over 30 students, they also destroyed my car parked outside and stole about N100,000, one police man was also killed.”

The gunmen attacked the school in the town of Yauri, and captured the students after a gun battle with security forces.

Officials at the school are conducting a headcount to find out the actual number of children that are missing.

In neighbouring Niger State, more than 130 Qur’anic school children were kidnapped by bandits last month and are still missing.

And in nearby Kaduna, parents of Greenfield university students that were kidnapped two months ago say they paid lots of money as ransom to buy the freedom of their children.

Nigeria has experienced plenty of school kidnapping attacks from late 2020, as no less than 1000 students have fallen victims.
