Fans mock Mendy after Chelsea lost 5-2 in West Brom humbling
Senegalese goalkeeper Édouard Mendy became the fall guy after Chelsea fell to a 5-2 defeat by West Brom in the Premier League on Saturday.
Chelsea had started the game well, taking the lead in the first half through Christian Pulisic, but a red card shown to Thiago Silva – who can now count himself as the oldest Chelsea player to be dismissed in a Premier League game – was the start of a humbling capitulation.
Two goals each from Pereira and Robinson and a swift finish from Mbaye Diagne condemned Chelsea who had not conceded a single goal at home under Thomas Tuchel’s reign to the unlikeliest of defeat.
However, some fans on Twitter are blaming Eduard Mendy who had replaced troubled Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Chelsea goal as the fall guy.
One fan wrote: “Mendy no even need chop again till Ramadan start” blaming the goalkeeper for conceding 5 goals despite his team playing with 10 men for the most part in the game.
Another wrote: “Edouard Mendy is just Kepa Arizzabalaga in a black man’s body” comparing Mendy to the former troubled goalkeeper.
This is the first time that Édouard Mendy will be conceding 5+ goals in a top-flight league game in his career.
