Insecurity: Kano joins Jigawa, Zamfara in closing schools
The government of Kano State has approved the closure of all public and private schools in the state with immediate effect.
This followed a similar move by the governments in Jigawa and Zamfara in the wake of the abduction of 500 students from a secondary school in Katsina, also in the North-west.
The directive was contained in a statement issued by Sanusi Kiru, Kano State commissioner for education, on Tuesday evening.
“Parents whose children are in boarding schools are to also arrange and convey their children/ wards back home from tomorrow, Wednesday, 16th December 2020,” Kiru said.
“All inconveniences are regretted.”
He did not specifically reveal the reason behind the schools’ closure, but it is believed to be connected to the abductions in neighbouring Katsina.
The announcement comes three days to the end of the third term. Schools in Kano were expected to close on Friday, December 18.
On Monday, Islamist terror group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of Schoolboys in Kankara, Katsina State. The group’s leader Abubakar Shekau said the school was teaching its students things that could “destroy Islam”.
