The actor announced he was ‘proudly gay’ a few weeks ago, and was met with mixed responses.

In a post on Instagram, he urged others to come out and share their identity, saying: “Don’t let anyone intimidate you. Come out, show your identity, you are who you are, boy, you’re who you are. Don’t let anybody intimidate you. I be gay, I be no herdsman, and I am proud.”

Uche’s coming was met with some expected resistance with one homophobic commenter saying she was offended, and would “unfollow immediately.”

Earlier, another Nigerian Bolu Okupe had made a much publicised coming out when he came out as “Gay AF” while in a pair of rainbow shorts and holding a Pride flag aloft.

Despite alots of orientation and show of support, Nigeria remains a dangerous country for the LGBTQ+ community. The country still prescribes 14 years in prison or the death penalty for homosexuality, as well as the criminalisation of LGBTQ+ rights discussions in its constitution.
