Olanrewaju Ganiu Fasasi AKA Sound Sultan has died
The death has been announced of veterans Nigerian musician Ganiu Fasasi, popularly known as Sound Sultan.
A statement from one Dr. Kayode Fasasi, believed to be his brother, announced the death on the morning of 11 July, 2021.
Sound Sultan whose real name is Olanrewaju Ganiu Fasasi died on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at the age of 44, his brother said in the family statement.
Several celebraties have been paying tribute to the late musician with this obituary poster on social media.
Sound sultan’s cause of death is believed to be Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.
Recently in May 2021, the singer announced he was sick on social media drawing messages of sympathy from many of his fans.
“Sound Sultan is by his wife, three children and his siblings.
“We, his family will appreciate the utmost privacy as we come to grips with this tragic loss.” The family’s statement concluded.
Sound Sultan profile
Everybody knows him as Sound Sultan but his real name is Olanrewaju Fasasi, an indigine of Oyo state but was born in Jos, Plateau state.
He is a rapper, singer-songwriter, actor, comedian and recording artist.
Sound sultan was born on November 27, 1976 and he is the fourth out of six children in his family.
His father is Liadi Alarape Fasasi and his mother is Adeyinka Ajarat Fasasi.
Sound sultan is married with three children – one girl and two boys.
Sound sultan educational background
Sound sultan attended Stepping stone nursery and primary school between 1981 and 1987.
He later moved to federal government college Ogbomosho from 1988 to 1993 for his secondary school education.
Sound Sultan received a BSc in Geography and regional planning from Lagos state university for 1999.
Musical career
He is among the pioneer set who started modern hip hop music genre in Nigeria.
Sound sultan’s career in showbiz start as early as in the 1990s – where he began doing shows to raise money to pay for his own studio sessions.
His music interest started from 1991 as he began miming for his schoolmates before he began to write his own lyrics.
Sound sultan learned how to play the guitar after his secondary school education and by 1999 he has put together his own band.
He attributes his early influence to his elder brother Baba Dee, who studied theatre arts.
Also as at 1999, Sound sultan had already won many local talent hunt shows and by 2000 he released his first single ‘Jagbajantis’ which brought him to the limelight.
Sound sultan has worked under two major record labels; Kennis Music from 1997 to 2008 and his own Naija Ninjas from 2008 till now.
