Heart starting device: Christian Eriksen to get ‘ICD – implantable cardioverter defibrillator’ implant after cardiac arrest
Danish footballer Christian Eriksen will get an implant of heart-starting device after he collapsed on the pitch during Euro 2020.
The 29-year-old Denmark midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest during their match against Finland in Copenhagen on Saturday.
Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator – ICD is “necessary due to rhythm disturbances”, Danish team doctor Morten Boesen said.
Eriksen is still in the hospital but says he is “fine under the circumstances”.
Heart starting device meaning
The British Heart Foundation describe ICD as a small device that is wearable under the skin.
It is connected to the heart with “thin wires” and it “sends electrical pulses to regulate abnormal heart rhythms”.
Heart starter is also known as implantable cardioverter defibrillator [ICD].
Doctors usually place the device under the skin just below the collar bone, next to the heart and monitor your heart rate through electrodes.
Boesen added: “Christian has accepted the solution and the plan has been confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally, who all recommend the same treatment.
“We encourage everybody to give Christian and his family peace and privacy.”
Former Spurs player Eriksen, who now plays for Inter Milan, collapsed shortly before half-time against Finland and he needed to be revived with a defibrillator.
