Veteran Nollywood Producer, Chico Ejiro Dies on Christmas Day

Chico Ejiro, the popular Nollywood producer died in the early hours of Christmas day from a seizure. His family said his remains have been deposited at the morgue.

Delta State-born Ejiro is a movie director, screenwriter, and producer who brought Nollywood to the limelight in the early 2000s. His 2002 profile in the New York Times titled “When There’s Too Much of a Not-Very-Good Thing” by Matt Steinglass highlighted the many challenges and opportunities available in Nollywood to the international community.

Prior to his death, he held the record of the Nollywood director with the highest number of released movies. He says he has produced and directed over 85 movies in his career in the span of three decades which started in the 1990s.

The last movie which he directed was only just completed on Christmas eve.

Ejiro studied Agriculture in school but was drawn into video production because Nigerians would not buy blank video cassettes.

The filmmaker is survived by his younger brother of veteran filmmaker, Zeb Ejiro. He is married to Joy Ejiro and they have four children.
