Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma kidnapped by ‘unknown gunmen’

Police in Enugu state, south-east Nigeria has confirmed the kidnapping of Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma.

In a statement, the police said the abduction of the coach happened on Tuesday, 15 June on his way back from Gombe State where Rivers United played Adamawa United last weekend.

The police said two men traveling with coach Eguma filed the complaint as they alleged “unidentified gunmen” attacked them.

Rivers United is yet to comment on the incident as the club’s General Manager told newsmen he will “respond soon on the issue”.

Eguma is the longest serving coach in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

He joined the now defunct Dolphins United in 2008. Rivers United retained him in 2017 after the State government merged Sharks and Dolphins to form the Port Harcourt based club.

Eguma is the second high profile kidnapping that will happen to an NPFL coach in recent times after Abdulahi Biffo of Katsina United spent three weeks in kidnapper’s hands in 2019.

How the incident happened

According to the statement released by the police spokesman ASP Daniel Ndukwe, two men complained on Thursday to the command Anti-Kidnapping Unit.

The men alleged unidentified gunmen in white-coloured Hilux van trailed and force- stopped their black-coloured Hilux van.

They further alleged that the gunmen pushed the two of them out, and drove away with the victim.

Enugu state commissioner of police, Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu has launched a full-scale investigation to rescue the coach.
