Cameroonian cross dresser, Shakiro two others arrested and tried for being gay

A popular Cameroonian cross dresser known as Shakiro and two others are standing trial in the Cameroonian capital, Douala.

In a short video posted on Facebook by Cameroon News Agency, the men can be seen leaving the court of first instance in Ndokotti Douala on Tuesday, after being found guilty of practicing homosexuality which is a crime in Cameroon.

The suspects were sent to the New Bell Central Prison in Douala. Cameroon’s penal code has criminalized same-sex sexual acts since 1972; Article 347 bis stipulates that such acts are punishable with fines of between 20,000 and 200,000 CFA francs—between roughly $40 and $400—and prison terms of between six months and five years.

It was gathered that Shakiro had been arrested several times and released.

Shakiro is an Instagram star, where he (he uses the pronoun He) serenades his almost 20,000 fans with catwalk videos and other fascinating content.

The LGBTQ community has little protection in most counties across Africa. Last month, Nigerian cross-dresser Bobrisky went viral when she announced she will soon be going for sex reassignment surgery to become a woman.
